Expansion leads the discussion
A 24-team College Football Playoff has become the leading expansion proposal ahead of Wednesday’s meeting at Big Ten headquarters, but approval is not expected this week. The existing 12-team format could continue if the financial terms fall short. The Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and Notre Dame have publicly backed the larger field. The SEC remains open to expansion while seeking clarity on revenue and a more consistent scheduling standard. A 30-day negotiating period began Sept. 9 to establish the media value of an expanded playoff. Leaders have until Dec. 1 to authorize a format change for 2027, with agreement between the SEC and Big Ten essential to moving forward.
Championship revenue complicates the decision
Making room for additional playoff games would mean eliminating Power 4 conference championship games, creating a substantial financial gap to fill. The SEC championship generates between $80 million and $100 million. Collectively, the Power 4 title games carry at least $200 million in media value, before ticket sales, sponsorships and other game-day income. The proposed calendar would begin the season during the current Week 0 and finish the regular season on Thanksgiving weekend. Moving Army-Navy to the following Saturday is also under consideration.
Schedules and bowls face changes
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey wants a commitment to schedules featuring 10 Power 4 opponents or Notre Dame. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti has indicated he is willing to adopt that requirement, though existing schedules could complicate implementation. Expansion would also reshape the bowl pool. Last year, 82 teams qualified for bowls, with 12 entering the playoff and 70 playing outside it. Bowl leaders argue that a larger CFP would still leave substantial demand for postseason opportunities, but some executives worry about losing attractive Power 4 participants and weakening the remaining matchups.
