Chemistry before hierarchy
The Philadelphia 76ers enter training camp with a crowded collection of stars and a shared message: individual adjustments will be essential to making the roster work. At Monday’s media day in Camden, New Jersey, Jaylen Brown declined to identify who would lead a group featuring LeBron James, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. James instead emphasized preparation, accountability and keeping outside attention from distracting the team. The group had already begun that work. James, Brown, Embiid and Maxey practiced together at the team’s training complex Monday before their media commitments, getting court time ahead of Tuesday’s camp opening. Embiid stressed the importance of spending time together away from basketball as well, with relationships and daily improvement forming the foundation for the season.
Maxey welcomes a different role
Sharing offensive responsibilities will be a central challenge. Maxey is coming off a career-best average of 28.3 points, while Brown averaged 28.7 before arriving in an offseason trade with Boston. Maxey indicated he is comfortable adapting. Alongside his usual ballhandling responsibilities, he sees opportunities to work off screens, take catch-and-shoot chances, receive handoffs and attack in transition. James, entering his 24th season at 41, framed those changes as necessary steps toward Philadelphia’s pursuit of its first championship since 1983. He argued that sacrificing individual preferences should be viewed as a route to team success rather than a setback. For James, the commitment also extends beyond the court: his move to Philadelphia means leaving his wife and family on the West Coast. His message was that talent alone will not deliver the outcome the team wants.
