Aaron Glenn returns to Ford Field on Sunday with a different sideline and a familiar challenge: trying to build the kind of turnaround he helped deliver in Detroit. The Jets coach will face Dan Campbell as a fellow head coach for the first time, with both teams entering at 1-1. Their connection stretches from playing together for the Dallas Cowboys in 2005 to coaching alongside each other in New Orleans and rebuilding the Lions.
Trust that survived a difficult start
Campbell had promised Glenn a defensive coordinator job if he ever became a head coach. When Detroit hired Campbell in 2021, he followed through. That commitment faced a serious test in 2022. The Lions opened 1-6, and Glenn’s defense allowed a league-high 32.1 points per game during that stretch. Campbell retained him despite mounting criticism, even as Detroit made other staff changes. The improvement that followed helped validate Campbell’s faith. Detroit won eight of its final 10 games while allowing 20.2 points per game across that span, narrowly missing the playoffs. Glenn went on to help build a team that reached a franchise-best 15 wins in 2024.
Lessons carried to New York
Glenn’s preparation for leading the Jets extended beyond running Detroit’s defense. Campbell gave him opportunities to organize practice scripts and speak to the entire team, responsibilities Glenn believes helped ready him for his current role. His 4-15 record in New York has brought intense scrutiny, but the difficult early stages of Detroit’s rebuild remain a reference point. Campbell is also drawing on that experience as current defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard faces criticism following a start in which the Lions surrendered 71 points and 915 yards. Campbell continues to support Sheppard, much as he backed Glenn. Sunday places Glenn and Campbell on opposite sides, but their shared experience remains central to how both approach the job.
