Back in the lineup
Alex Bregman returned to the Chicago Cubs lineup against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, resuming play after a foul ball left him with multiple facial fractures Sunday. The Cubs third baseman was injured while standing in the on-deck circle during Chicago’s 9-1 victory at Cincinnati. The ball came off teammate Michael Busch’s bat. For his return at Fenway Park, Chicago used Bregman as its designated hitter rather than at third base. The appearance also brought him back to the ballpark where he played for Boston during the 2025 season.
Medical clearance followed productive workdays
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said doctors had cleared Bregman to play and that he had completed two very good days of work. According to Counsell, Bregman felt ready to return Thursday and was eager to get into a game. Counsell credited Bregman’s toughness and enthusiasm for baseball while acknowledging the unusual nature of the injury. He said the club had discussed the risks with Bregman and worked to minimize them before moving forward with his return. Bregman joined Chicago after becoming a free agent following his season with the Red Sox. His deal with the Cubs is worth $175 million over five years.
