Davis sets a later timetable
Anthony Davis intends to complete the season with the Washington Wizards before deciding whether to sign a contract extension, pushing his preferred timeline beyond an earlier plan to revisit negotiations once play began. Speaking at media day Monday, Davis said his focus is on performing at a high level before returning to discussions with the front office after the season. The Wizards and his agent, Rich Paul, had previously agreed to postpone talks until the season started, allowing time to evaluate the team's progress. Davis became extension-eligible in early August and can sign for up to four years and $275 million. His current contract includes a $62 million player option for next season. An extension would replace that option in its opening year.
Washington builds around veteran leaders
The Wizards acquired Davis in February after trading for Trae Young weeks earlier. Washington later added AJ Dybantsa with the No. Davis' longer-term status remains unresolved, but his immediate assignment includes helping develop Dybantsa, Tre Johnson and Alex Sarr. He emphasized setting expectations through energy, intensity and guidance for younger teammates. A hand injury prevented Davis from playing for Washington last season. Now preparing to take the court, he expressed optimism about a roster that also added Khris Middleton and Deandre Ayton. The Wizards have not made the playoffs since 2021 and have finished with fewer than 20 wins in each of the past three seasons. Davis views the offseason additions as evidence of a commitment to winning and wants Washington to become an opponent teams take seriously.
