Arizona State University continues discussions with Colorado Avalanche assistant Dave Hakstol about becoming the next head coach of its men's hockey program. The Avalanche have allowed Hakstol to speak with the school, and a decision is expected soon. Hakstol remains with the Avalanche as talks proceed.
Previous Coach Placed on Leave
The university placed former coach Greg Powers on administrative leave after a review of an early-morning workout. Defenseman Matthew Mayich, age 21, collapsed during the session held in nearly 90-degree conditions. An internal examination found the hockey program had not submitted a training plan for review beforehand. Seven players later sent a letter to university leadership, after which Powers was placed on paid leave and assistant Mike Corbett took over interim duties.
Hakstol Brings Extensive College Experience
Hakstol coached 11 years at North Dakota, posting a 289-143-43 record and leading the team to 11 straight NCAA tournament appearances along with seven Frozen Four berths. He later served as head coach in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers from 2015 to 2018 and in Seattle from 2021 to 2024 before joining Colorado in 2025.
