Manager's Support
Mikel Arteta has spoken in support of Viktor Gyökeres following criticism over the striker's opening period without a goal. The forward joined from Sporting CP last summer for a fee of €73 million (£61.5m) and went on to score 14 Premier League goals during the season Arsenal claimed the title for the first time in 22 years.
Summer Market and Selection
The club explored options to add another forward, with interest in Julián Álvarez from Atletico Madrid that included the possibility of Gyökeres featuring in any deal. No signing was made, and Arteta has chosen Kai Havertz for the biggest fixtures so far. Gyökeres has yet to score in seven appearances but came close during a 65-minute outing against Lille.
Recent Display and Outlook
In that match Gyökeres recorded 12 touches and no shots. Arteta noted the fine margins that separate scoring from not scoring and stressed the player's consistent determination and effort. Havertz is set to return for the visit to Nottingham Forest. On the injury front, Piero Hincapié remains a week or two from a return after an ankle issue, while Martín Zubimendi is progressing well and may feature within the next week.
