A sudden defensive surge
Texas Tech linebacker Austin Romaine transformed a narrow advantage into a commanding lead against Sam Houston on Saturday in Lubbock, scoring on interceptions of consecutive pass attempts during the opening minute of the second quarter. The No. 11 Red Raiders were ahead 7-0 when linebacker Brock Golwas jumped to tip a Brett Holloway pass. Romaine also went airborne, secured the deflection and took it 15 yards to the end zone with 14:54 remaining before halftime. After the kickoff, Sam Houston starting quarterback Landyn Locke returned to the game. His first-down throw went to Romaine, who raced 31 yards for another touchdown. Just seven seconds separated the scores, with Texas Tech's advantage growing to 21-0.
A rare Big 12 achievement
The Red Raiders became the first Big 12 team to score on interception returns on consecutive defensive possessions since Nebraska accomplished the feat against Idaho in September 2010. Texas Tech had not recorded multiple interception-return touchdowns in a game since the 2000 season. Romaine also joined a small group individually. He became the fifth player in conference history with multiple interception-return touchdowns in a game, and the first since Kansas State's Bobby Walker in 2002. A senior transfer from Kansas State, Romaine arrived after recording 184 tackles, including 110 solo stops, across the past three seasons with the Wildcats. His only Kansas State interception came against Texas Tech last season.
