Colorado commits to Bednar
The Colorado Avalanche announced Wednesday that they have agreed to a four-year contract extension with coach Jared Bednar, keeping him under contract through 2030-31. Bednar had been approaching the 2026-27 season with his existing deal due to expire at its conclusion. The extension removes that uncertainty as Colorado prepares to open its regular season Wednesday at home against the Los Angeles Kings. General manager Joe Sakic had already confirmed in June that Bednar and his staff would return. The new agreement adds a longer-term commitment following a postseason exit that had raised questions about the coach’s future.
Strong record, unfinished business
Colorado won the Presidents’ Trophy and established a franchise record with 121 points in 2025-26, but the Vegas Golden Knights swept the Avalanche in the Western Conference finals. Despite that finish, Sakic expressed confidence in Bednar’s leadership, his standing with the players and his ability to get the most from the current core. The Avalanche have made the playoffs in eight of Bednar’s nine seasons behind the bench, including their Stanley Cup championship in 2021-22. Only Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper, hired in 2013, has a longer current tenure among NHL coaches. Bednar expressed gratitude for the organization’s backing and emphasized that winning another Stanley Cup remains the goal.
