Preliminary Diagnosis Raises Concerns
Sacramento Kings guard Ben Simmons received a preliminary diagnosis indicating a torn Achilles tendon. The injury is viewed as likely season-ending after the 6-foot-10, 240-pound player had shown strong form in training camp and two preseason appearances.
Recent Signing and Expected Role
Simmons agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Kings on Sept. 4. The team anticipated using him as a backup point guard behind rookie Darius Acuff Jr. and as a versatile option capable of playing positions 1 through 5 in a high-upside reclamation effort.
Workouts and Preseason Output
Before the deal, Simmons impressed general manager Scott Perry during a Miami workout and an hourlong meeting in late August. He later visited Sacramento, where he completed a medical exam and on-court session that also won over coach Doug Christie and staff. In his two preseason games, Simmons averaged 10.5 points in 17.5 minutes.
