Limited work before practice
Brandon Ingram spent about 45 minutes on the court ahead of the Clippers’ opening training camp practice Tuesday morning at the University of Hawai'i, working through a limited routine as his rehabilitation continues. His session included light shooting and defensive slides with assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy, followed by dribble moves that put a little more demand on his heel. The work appeared to be at half speed. Ingram remained on the sideline when the team moved into the contact portion of practice.
Return date remains unclear
Ingram will miss the beginning of the regular season, and coach Ty Lue has not offered a firm timetable for his return. Lue indicated that incorporating Ingram into the team’s plays and learning his preferences will become part of the process as he gets closer to playing. While with Toronto, Ingram missed the final two games of the Raptors’ first-round loss to Cleveland last April. During heel surgery in May, doctors also found and repaired a partially torn Achilles. The Clippers knew about the injury and extended rehabilitation outlook before completing the Kawhi Leonard trade for Ingram. Interim president of basketball operations Trent Redden said the anticipated recovery was about six months shorter than it would be for a fully torn Achilles. Los Angeles will practice at the University of Hawai'i throughout the week before facing Golden State in its preseason opener Sunday afternoon in Honolulu.
