Purdy sets an impressive early pace
Brock Purdy has a compelling early MVP argument after helping the 49ers reach 3-0 despite injuries at wide receiver. He has completed 72.3% of his passes, averaged 263 passing yards per game and thrown nine touchdowns against one interception. His mobility has added another dimension, producing 93 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Purdy also matched Steve Young’s franchise record for touchdown passes through the opening three games. San Francisco has not scored this many points over that stretch since 1998. Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen remain part of the discussion, but Purdy’s combination of efficiency and team success makes him an early benchmark—not a settled winner.
Pittsburgh’s adjustments pay off
The Steelers gave their offense a much-needed lift in a 30-27 victory over Cincinnati that moved them to 2-1. After spending the week addressing communication between blockers and runners and changing the right side of the starting offensive line, Pittsburgh generated 411 yards. Jaylen Warren supplied 127 rushing yards on 17 carries, while Bengals punt mistakes helped the Steelers collect 10 second-half points. That performance strengthens the case that Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers can extend Pittsburgh’s run without a losing season. A demanding remaining schedule still makes any firm prediction premature.
Cleveland offers promise; Giants still face questions
Todd Monken has Cleveland at 2-1 after beating Carolina, even though the Browns have been outgained in every game. Their defense and ability to win despite limited offensive production give the new head coach an encouraging foundation. The Giants also stand at 2-1 after Jameis Winston avoided turnovers in a rain-soaked 12-7 win over Tennessee. But with Jaxson Dart sidelined by a season-ending injury, that result does not resolve their longer-term quarterback uncertainty. Managing difficult conditions successfully is encouraging; sustaining reliable play remains the larger test.
