Another escape builds belief
The Denver Broncos have become comfortable playing from behind. Their challenge now is avoiding the need to do it again. Denver’s 30-26 victory over the Los Angeles Rams marked its 10th fourth-quarter comeback win since drafting Bo Nix in 2024. It also followed a rally against Jacksonville from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter, giving the franchise consecutive wins after trailing by double digits in the second half for the first time. Against the Rams, Denver fell behind 16-0 and was outgained 273-67 before halftime. The response was decisive: Nix delivered passing and rushing touchdowns, while Hufanga supplied a 66-yard interception return for a score as the Broncos produced 30 second-half points.
Late execution masks early problems
The Broncos view their recoveries as more than fortunate breaks. Players point to timely defensive stops, turnovers, third-down conversions and red zone execution, along with Nix’s composure under pressure. The quarterback’s results support that confidence. After leading the league with seven game-winning drives last season, Nix has added two this season. His overall QBR of 46.6 rises to 60.6 in the fourth quarter. Still, Sean Payton has made clear that Denver’s early struggles need correcting. The Broncos have scored just 10 first-half points this season, leaving their late-game execution to carry a heavy burden.
San Francisco raises the stakes
Denver takes its 2-1 record on the road Sunday against the 3-0 San Francisco 49ers, whose offense presents a particularly difficult opponent to chase. Brock Purdy leads the NFL with a 93.8 QBR and nine touchdown passes while having thrown only one interception. San Francisco also tops the league in offensive efficiency and offensive expected points added. Denver’s repeated rallies have strengthened its belief under pressure. Against the unbeaten 49ers, a cleaner opening could matter more than another dramatic finish.
