Response to the Change
Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb acknowledged the move to remove him from play-calling as less than ideal but stated he remains fully committed to the team, the offense and quarterback Bo Nix. The change came after the first four games produced a 2-2 record against opponents that combined for a 13-3 mark to open the season. Webb noted that evaluating the sample size falls to Payton and emphasized the challenges of facing strong defenses early.
Offensive Struggles in Early Weeks
The Broncos rank near the bottom of the league in several categories after four games, sitting 27th in scoring, 27th in total yards per game, 29th in rushing yards per game, 20th in passing yards per game, 23rd in QBR and 22nd in Offensive EPA at -7.48. They have also posted the 29th-most plays of 20 or more yards and rank 30th in explosive plays with 16 total. Quarterback Bo Nix stands 22nd in QBR at 46.1 and 27th in average air yards per attempt at 5.9, while 27.5 percent of possessions have ended in three-and-outs.
Looking Ahead to the Chargers
The Broncos visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday at SoFi Stadium, where the opponent ranks 24th in scoring defense. Webb expressed that the offense sits close to producing more explosive plays and looks forward to the unit's response under the adjusted structure. Payton, who previously praised Webb as a future head coach, will now handle the play-calling duties in an effort to improve consistency on first downs and in the run game.
