Arizona faces a rotation decision
The Diamondbacks placed Corbin Burnes on the 15-day injured list Friday because of shoulder inflammation, removing him from consideration for his scheduled start Saturday night in San Diego. Arizona recalled right-hander Jose Cabrera from Triple-A Reno but had not settled on its pitching plan for Saturday. The club’s approach depended in large part on the outcome of Friday night’s game, with its chances of claiming the National League’s final wild-card berth hanging in the balance.
Another interruption for Burnes
Burnes had only recently rejoined Arizona’s rotation following a 15-month recovery from Tommy John surgery. His major league return came Sept. 8, and he made three starts before this latest setback. Across those appearances, Burnes posted a 7.84 ERA over 10⅓ innings, striking out eight batters and walking four. He did not receive a decision in any of those outings. The shoulder issue now interrupts that return while Arizona is trying to extend its season.
Wild-card margin remains narrow
Arizona’s elimination number stood at two. The Diamondbacks then built an early 6-2 advantage, getting home runs from Nolan Arenado, Lars Nootbaar and Jordan Lawlar. That early offense helped Arizona’s immediate cause, even as the club faced uncertainty over its next starting assignment.
