Late Rally Secures Victory
No. 8 BYU outlasted No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24 on Saturday night behind a go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:47 remaining. The Cougars improved to 6-0 while handing the Irish their first loss of the season, dropping Notre Dame to 6-1. Bear Bachmeier threw for 224 yards and also ran for two touchdowns while catching another score. Preston Rex gained 66 yards on 10 carries as BYU started 6-0 for the third straight season.
Irish Close the Gap
Notre Dame trimmed an 11-point halftime lead to five points entering the fourth quarter after field goals that followed a muffed punt return and a failed fake punt by BYU. Jonaz Walton scored on a 3-yard run to give the Irish the lead with 9:31 left. CJ Carr then connected on several passes, including a fourth-down throw to Micah Gilbert that moved Notre Dame to the BYU 9 with four seconds remaining, but the final pass fell incomplete in the end zone.
Defense Delivers Final Stop
After Bachmeier led BYU into Notre Dame territory, Jayden Sanders intercepted a pass at the Irish 15 with 8:05 left. The Cougars forced a three-and-out and then drove 55 yards in 10 plays. Bachmeier found Walker Lyons for a 6-yard touchdown to take the lead. Notre Dame reached the BYU 9 on the final possession before the incomplete pass ended the game.
