Baltimore’s Quarterback Crisis Changes Everything

Thursday Night Football brings a very different challenge for the 4-4 Ravens, who will start Joe Fagnano in place of Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley against a Jacksonville team leading the AFC South at 5-2. Jackson is out with a right thumb injury and Huntley is unavailable with a toe issue, leaving Fagnano to make his first NFL start only four days after completing 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and an interception against Buffalo. Baltimore has little reason to hide its plan: protect the rookie, run the football and avoid obvious passing situations. That immediately makes Fagnano passing attempts, interceptions, Ravens team total and Jacksonville first-half markets more interesting than a standard quarterback-yardage over.

Derrick Henry Has to Become the Center of Baltimore’s Offense

If the Ravens want to keep this game under control, Derrick Henry will need volume, especially after combining for only 98 rushing yards over the last two games. Baltimore’s best path is to stay ahead of the chains, use play action and prevent Fagnano from repeatedly facing third-and-long against a Jacksonville defense that can attack an inexperienced quarterback. That is why Henry rushing attempts may be more useful than focusing only on rushing yards: even if his efficiency is modest, the Ravens should continue feeding him as long as the score remains manageable. If Jacksonville builds an early lead, however, that game plan can disappear quickly and force Baltimore into exactly the pass-heavy situation it wants to avoid.

Jacksonville Has the More Stable Path to Points

Jacksonville enters with momentum after a 42-7 win over Indianapolis, and Trevor Lawrence does not need to play hero ball for the Jaguars to control Thursday night. Baltimore’s defense has allowed at least 35 points in consecutive games and has struggled to create interceptions, so Jacksonville’s cleanest strategy is simply to protect the football, create manageable downs and make Fagnano chase the scoreboard. That puts Jaguars team total, Jacksonville first half, Lawrence completions and passing touchdowns firmly in play. The biggest offensive uncertainty is Bhayshul Tuten, who remains questionable with ankle and foot injuries and is considered a game-time decision after missing the week’s practices. If he cannot go, Chris Rodriguez Jr. could absorb additional backfield work.

Travon Walker’s Status Matters More With a Rookie Across From Him

Jacksonville also has a defensive injury worth monitoring because Travon Walker is questionable with a rib issue. His availability matters more than usual in a matchup against a first-time starting quarterback: if Walker can play, the Jaguars have a better chance to create pressure without relying heavily on blitzes, keeping extra defenders in coverage while forcing Fagnano to make quick decisions. If Walker is unavailable, Baltimore gains at least some relief in protection. That directly affects Jaguars sacks, Fagnano interceptions and Baltimore’s team total, three markets tied closely to how often the rookie is forced into uncomfortable dropbacks.

Zay Flowers Could Become Fagnano’s Safety Valve

Baltimore also needs to simplify the passing game, and Zay Flowers is the obvious player to help. Flowers did not record a reception against Buffalo, but that makes it even more likely the Ravens manufacture easier touches through screens, short crossers and quick throws designed to keep Fagnano in rhythm. In that type of game plan, Flowers receptions may make more sense than an aggressive receiving-yard prop because Baltimore does not need him consistently winning deep; it needs him giving its rookie quarterback reliable completions and manageable second downs.

The Betting Angles That Matter Most Tonight

The strongest game-script angle is Jacksonville first half, because the Jaguars enter with the established quarterback and significantly more offensive stability. Baltimore team total is another important market given the quarterback change, while Henry rushing attempts reflect how the Ravens are most likely to structure the offense. Fagnano interception props become increasingly attractive if Jacksonville takes an early lead, and Flowers receptions fit Baltimore’s need for quick, low-risk throws. On the Jaguars side, Lawrence passing touchdowns may offer a better connection to the matchup than chasing a large yardage total, while any Chris Rodriguez props should depend on Tuten’s final status.

Can Baltimore Keep Thursday Night Competitive?

Baltimore still has enough talent to turn this into a physical, low-possession game, especially if Henry establishes the run and the defense creates short fields. But Jacksonville has the clearer path: protect Lawrence, force Fagnano to throw and make Baltimore’s rookie quarterback prove he can sustain drives under prime-time pressure. The Ravens do get some offensive-line help with Vega Ioane returning, but the entire matchup still revolves around whether they can keep Fagnano out of situations where Jacksonville knows he has to pass.
