San Francisco’s Perfect Start Faces a Different Kind of Test

Monday Night Football closes Week 6 with the 5-0 San Francisco 49ers hosting the 1-3-1 Washington Commanders, but the records do not tell the whole story. Washington looked much more dangerous with Jayden Daniels back last week, when he produced 199 passing yards, 103 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, while San Francisco enters without Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel. Bosa’s absence is especially important because Daniels can punish defenses with his legs, making Jayden Daniels rushing yards one of the most interesting props tonight. San Francisco still owns the more stable team profile, but Washington has enough mobility and offensive flexibility to make this matchup more competitive than the standings suggest.

Washington Has a Path to Compete — but Finishing Is the Bigger Question

Washington showed against the Giants that it can control stretches of a game, but blowing a 27-13 fourth-quarter lead reinforced the biggest concern surrounding this team: finishing. San Francisco has consistently been better in those moments, including last week’s 32-29 win over Seattle, when the defense created four takeaways and five sacks before the offense completed another late comeback. Brock Purdy has also remained highly efficient with 13 touchdowns through five games and at least two passing scores in every appearance. That contrast makes Washington first-half markets more appealing than trusting the Commanders for a full game, while another strong Washington start could create an interesting live opportunity on San Francisco later.

Christian McCaffrey Should Carry Even More of the Offense

With Deebo Samuel out and other San Francisco receivers carrying injury questions, Christian McCaffrey should remain the center of the offense. His value goes beyond rushing yards because Kyle Shanahan can use him as a receiver whenever Washington crowds the box, making rushing + receiving yards and receptions especially relevant. McCaffrey also gives San Francisco a way to control the second half if the 49ers build a lead. For Brock Purdy, that same setup makes passing touchdowns potentially more attractive than a large passing-yard total, since San Francisco has not needed massive passing volume to score efficiently this season.

Washington’s Backfield Could Shift Toward the Passing Game

Washington will be without leading rusher Jacory Croskey-Merritt, which should increase the roles of Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler. Instead of assuming either back suddenly receives a huge rushing workload, their receptions and receiving yards may be more useful markets because Washington can use short passes to replace some traditional rushing volume and give Daniels easier answers against pressure. Stefon Diggs is also questionable with a hamstring injury, so if he is limited or inactive, Terry McLaurin could see an even larger share of the passing game.

The Betting Angles That Stand Out Tonight

The clearest Washington angle is Daniels rushing yards, particularly with Bosa unavailable, while McCaffrey rushing + receiving yards stands out for San Francisco because of his expected usage and the injuries around him. Purdy passing touchdowns also fit the 49ers’ efficient offensive profile, while Washington’s recent tendency to start better than it finishes makes Commanders first-half markets and 49ers second-half or live positions worth considering. Washington has enough talent with Daniels to keep the game competitive, but San Francisco has been the more reliable team in critical situations, so the biggest question tonight is whether the Commanders can maintain their level for four quarters instead of simply starting well.
