A milestone in Orlando
Cavan Sullivan stepped into the United States lineup for Saturday’s friendly against Peru in Orlando, earning his international debut at 16 years, 362 days. Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to start the Philadelphia Union attacker made Sullivan the fourth-youngest player to earn a U.S. Cap. No younger player had appeared for the national team since Freddy Adu, who was 16 years, 234 days when he entered as a substitute against Canada in January 2006. Mike Slivinski and Mark Jonas also made their U.S. Debuts at younger ages than Sullivan, who turns 17 on Monday.
Union form opens the door
Sullivan’s first national-team invitation followed a strong stretch with Philadelphia. He has contributed seven goals and 12 assists across 26 MLS appearances, helping the Union climb to sixth in the Eastern Conference. His production has accelerated since league play resumed following the World Cup break, with six goals and eight assists in his last eight league games. Pochettino has emphasized the need to handle Sullivan’s development carefully. Before the Peru match, the U.S. Manager pointed to the attacker’s club performances and on-field maturity as reasons he was ready for the opportunity.
Another step in a rapid rise
Sullivan already held a notable place in MLS history. His Union debut on July 17, 2024, came at 14 years and 293 days, making him the youngest participant in a major professional sports league match in the United States and Canada. He lowered Adu’s previous mark by 13 days. His Philadelphia contract includes a provision allowing a transfer to Manchester City when he turns 18 in 2027. For now, the international schedule offers further opportunities, with U.S. Friendlies against Chile, Mexico and Canada to follow the Peru match during the September/October window.
