A window for emerging talent

Mauricio Pochettino is opening the door to a younger United States squad for friendlies in late September and early October, resting several established players after the summer’s World Cup. The 28-player group includes 13 players awaiting their senior international debuts, with eight teenagers among them. Matches against opponents including Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada will provide an early test for prospects who could shape the team heading toward the 2030 World Cup.

Sullivan brings production to the spotlight

Cavan Sullivan arrives with substantial attacking momentum. The Manchester City-bound midfielder, who is set to move when he turns 18, has matched Lionel Messi with 13 MLS goal contributions since league play resumed after the World Cup. Sullivan is averaging 1.10 goals and assists combined, 2.4 chances and 2.9 shots per 90 minutes in MLS. His creativity and improving finishing make him a compelling player to watch, though comparisons with Michael Olise remain an optimistic projection rather than an established level. Julian Hall offers another productive attacking option. The Red Bull New York forward leads MLS teenagers with 10 goals in 26 appearances this season, while 51% of his shots have been on target.

Different routes to an opportunity

Gozo brings direct running from the right flank after moving from Real Salt Lake to Crystal Palace. His output over the past year includes six goals and five assists, alongside 8.1 progressive carries per 90 minutes. Albert offers pace and dribbling after becoming the youngest American Bundesliga player at 16 with Borussia Dortmund. His limited playing time, however, calls for caution when assessing his statistical averages. In midfield, Adri Mehmeti provides ball-winning and distribution. The 17-year-old Red Bull player averages 6.6 recoveries and 9.0 line-breaking passes per 90 minutes. Translating those club strengths into senior international performances is the next challenge for this emerging group.
