Offensive Struggles Mount for McDaniel
The Chargers have dealt with multiple injuries on offense, including their top two wide receivers and three best offensive linemen. Through five weeks the unit ranks 28th in EPA per play on designed rushes and faces a numbers disadvantage in the run game 36.2 percent of the time. The team averages 2.5 yards per carry and minus-0.32 EPA per play on those attempts. The quarterback has posted a 26.6 Total QBR, leads the league with seven interceptions, and holds a 5.0 QBR in the fourth quarter with four picks and five strip sacks.
Montgomery and Bland Under Review
The running back has averaged 2.7 yards per carry with a 23.1 percent success rate and just one gain of 10-plus yards on 52 carries. A recent groin injury has opened opportunities for another back who gained 62 yards on 15 carries and added 23 yards on four catches. The cornerback recorded nine interceptions in 2023 but has one interception across 24 games since then and has allowed passer ratings above 100 in coverage each of the past three seasons, including a 126.2 mark this year.
Kicker Situation Draws Attention
The sixth-round pick missed one field goal and one extra point through four games before struggling in a later contest with misses on attempts from 43 and 47 yards plus an extra point. All three kicks were wide on a mild day. The team had previously moved on from another kicker after postseason misses, raising questions about long-term plans at the position.
