Proposed Field Makeup
The postseason is moving toward a 24-team format that would feature the four Power conference champions along with the top-ranked Group of 6 squad and 19 at-large selections. This setup follows the recent shift that took the field from four to 12 teams and is slated to begin in 2027 once final approvals are secured.
Seeding and Incentives
Under the plan the top eight seeds would receive first-round byes and then host games in the next round. Seeds nine through 16 would host opening-round contests, creating layered motivation for teams near the cutoff lines to improve their positions or protect their spots. The model is designed to keep regular-season stakes intact through these built-in rewards.
Bowl Sites and Schedule Shift
The six New Year's Six bowls would continue to stage quarterfinal and semifinal matchups, with the national title game still set for January. The overall season would start one week earlier, and the Power 4 conference championship contests would be eliminated as part of the broader agreement.
