Record falls against Colorado
Colson Montgomery reached an unwanted milestone Friday in Chicago, recording his 224th strikeout of the season to establish a single-season record. The White Sox infielder went down looking against Rockies pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano. After working the count full, Montgomery took a fastball through the heart of the strike zone for the called strikeout. That moved him past former Diamondbacks infielder Mark Reynolds, whose 223 strikeouts in 2009 had stood as the record.
Power production alongside the strikeouts
Montgomery’s season has featured substantial run production as well as frequent strikeouts. The 24-year-old has delivered 31 home runs and driven in 87 runs while helping the White Sox reach the playoffs. That combination echoes Reynolds’ record-setting season, when he also hit 44 home runs. For Montgomery, the power has remained a valuable part of his contribution despite the difficulty making consistent contact. His strikeout rate sits at 35.5 percent, behind only teammate Munetaka Murakami’s 35.6 percent among qualified hitters. Both Montgomery’s chase rate and strikeout rate have increased from his rookie season last year. The recent stretch has reflected that trend: He has struck out in all but two of the games he has played this month.
