Availability still open
Jayden Daniels said Thursday he is managing his left elbow on a day-by-day basis and has no worry about reinjuring it when he returns. Both clubs sit at 1-2. Whether Daniels starts remains unclear; if he cannot go, Marcus Mariota would make a second straight start.
Second dislocation, no surgery now
Daniels dislocated the non-throwing elbow in the Week 2 loss at Dallas, the second time he has suffered that injury. He first dislocated it in Week 9 last season and aggravated it five weeks later at Minnesota, after which Washington shut him down for the rest of that year. After the latest setback he saw specialists in New York and Los Angeles. They did not recommend immediate surgery, and he wanted to keep playing. Surgery could still be discussed after the season, depending on medical advice then. A different brace now holds the elbow slightly bent to help prevent another dislocation.
Practice work and mindset
Daniels said the brace does not alter handoffs or his throwing motion, and he has long kept the left elbow tucked while throwing. He was not surprised to be back on the field so soon and stressed his desire to lead and compete while protecting himself. The latest injury came on the final play of the first half on third-and-goal when a lineman stepped on his foot, he stumbled and braced himself with the left arm, ending a stretch in which he felt he had found a rhythm.
