Jalon Daniels became the first undrafted rookie starting quarterback in the common draft era to secure a victory for a team that began the season without a win. He directed the Buccaneers to a 24-16 victory over the Cowboys on Thursday night.
Efficient passing attack
Daniels finished 19 of 25 for 189 yards and one touchdown while adding 23 rushing yards. He also connected on a 64-yard completion. Running back Bucky Irving carried the load with a career-high 165 rushing yards and scored on the ground and through the air. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka added a rushing touchdown and paced the team with six receptions.
Stepping into the lineup
The rookie took over for Baker Mayfield, who suffered a dislocated right thumb in Week 3 and will miss at least three weeks. Daniels went 8 for 8 in one stretch that included a 5-yard touchdown pass. Tampa Bay improved from an 0-4 start behind the performance.
