Deal closes lengthy holdout
Jalen Duren has agreed to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract to remain with the Detroit Pistons. The All-NBA center, a restricted free agent, reached the agreement on Thursday night through agent Chafie Fields, resolving a four-month contract standoff that stretched through the summer and into the opening of training camp. Duren had stayed unsigned at the start of camp, skipping media day and the first practices after declining the same five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed proposal two weeks earlier. Offers during the summer had ranged from $170 million to $190 million before he accepted the standing Pistons package.
Deadline pressure and earlier friction
ET cutoff to take a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer that would have made him an unrestricted free agent next summer. No player who has earned All-NBA or All-Star honors has ever signed such a qualifying offer. Representatives had signaled he felt disrespected by the process, particularly when measured against forward Ausar Thompson’s five-year, $155 million rookie-scale extension agreed earlier this month. Weight clauses in some prior Pistons proposals also drew objections.
Production, playoffs and team stance
Duren, 22, posted career-best regular-season numbers with 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds on 65 percent shooting across 70 games, helping Detroit claim the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed. His output fell in the postseason to 10.5 points and 8.5 rebounds on 51 percent shooting in 14 games as the Pistons exited against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 of the East semifinals. Throughout the summer friction Detroit maintained he was central to its future and declined to pursue sign-and-trade discussions. President of basketball operations Trajan Langdon voiced ongoing confidence Duren would re-sign in some form, while coach J.B. Bickerstaff and star Cade Cunningham publicly backed him and stayed in contact. The Pistons open the preseason Monday at home against the Phoenix Suns.
