Philadelphia makes its move

The NBA’s summer shake-up has given Philadelphia a dramatically different outlook heading into the 2026-27 season. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown headline an overhaul that also brought Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the Sixers. Moving on from Paul George while adding Brown helped Philadelphia become an appealing destination for James. The reshaped roster also reduces its reliance on Joel Embiid’s availability, with the center set to turn 33 during the season. Boston, meanwhile, is balancing greater long-term flexibility around Jayson Tatum with immediate questions. George arrives alongside Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley, but his durability will be important. Robinson gives the Celtics additional defense and rebounding after their frontcourt struggled in the playoffs.

Milwaukee starts over, Toronto welcomes Leonard

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s trade to Miami closes his Milwaukee tenure after 13 seasons and sends the Bucks into a rebuild. Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. And Kasparas Jakucionis arrive from the Heat, while new coach Taylor Jenkins takes on the task of establishing the team’s direction. Toronto has a different ambition after completing its acquisition of Kawhi Leonard. His return gives the Raptors an upgrade on the wing alongside Scottie Barnes, with most of the starting lineup preserved. After winning 46 games last season, Toronto has reason to target a deeper postseason run.

New York prioritizes continuity

The defending champion Knicks kept their starting lineup together and retained bench contributors Jordan Clarkson, Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet on below-market contracts. Robinson’s departure to Boston leaves a frontcourt adjustment, with Andre Drummond joining New York. Still, while several Eastern rivals have changed their identities, the Knicks enter their title defense relying largely on the group that delivered the championship.
