Milestone arrives on the bases
Elly De La Cruz completed a 30-homer, 30-steal season Friday in Toronto, becoming the fourth player in Cincinnati Reds history to reach both marks. The shortstop delivered a two-run double in the third inning, then stole third on Jose Soriano’s next pitch to secure his place in the club. The stolen base came a day after De La Cruz hit his 30th home run during Cincinnati’s 7-6 victory at Atlanta. His milestone followed a groundout in his opening at-bat Friday, when Soriano fielded a 94 mph one-hopper with a between-the-legs stop.
Joining a select Cincinnati group
De La Cruz adds his name to a Reds list that previously featured only Eric Davis, Barry Larkin and Brandon Phillips. Davis established the franchise’s first 30-30 season in 1987 with 37 home runs and 50 stolen bases. Larkin followed in 1996, pairing 33 homers with 36 steals, while Phillips finished with 30 home runs and 32 steals in 2007. The two-time All-Star also reached a separate mark for sustained success on the bases. De La Cruz became Cincinnati’s first player, and the eighth major leaguer since 1900, to record at least 30 steals in each of his first four seasons. Kansas City’s Bobby Witt accomplished that feat from 2022 to 2025.
