Philadelphia opens with encouraging health update
Joel Embiid participated throughout the Philadelphia 76ers’ opening training camp practice Tuesday, giving the reshaped roster an encouraging start as LeBron James and Jaylen Brown took part in their first official workout with the franchise. Coach Nick Nurse praised Embiid’s performance and viewed his availability as a welcome change from the injury concerns surrounding previous camp openings. The center has missed 150 games across the last three seasons and was unavailable for four of Philadelphia’s 11 playoff games in the spring because of appendicitis, right hip soreness and a right ankle sprain. Even with those setbacks, Embiid averaged 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.2 blocks last season. Backup big man Adem Bona, who has a sprained left foot, was Philadelphia’s only player to miss Tuesday’s practice.
New arrivals begin building chemistry
Anfernee Simons, who joined Philadelphia in July on a two-year, $12.3 million contract, said Embiid’s work before camp had impressed teammates. James arrived through free agency after leaving the Lakers, while Brown came from Boston in a trade driven largely by cost-cutting. Their presence helped generate enthusiasm around the opening session, but Nurse emphasized that sustained daily improvement would determine whether Philadelphia reaches its potential.
Las Vegas bids under review
Elsewhere around the league, the NBA is evaluating finalist bids for a potential Las Vegas expansion franchise. The speculated cost is $12-13 billion, including a new arena. The remaining groups pair Nancy Walton Laurie with Bill Laurie, Steve Apostolopoulos with Marc Lasry, and Bill Foley with Jerry Colangelo.
