Build flexibility into draft plans

Fantasy baseball leagues face an uncertain offseason as MLB’s labor agreement approaches its Dec. 1 expiration at 11:59 p.m. ET. A work stoppage is possible, but its length and effect on the 2027 season remain unknown. The previous lockout lasted 99 days, delaying the 2022 opener without reducing the eventual 162-game schedule. That outcome offers reassurance, though the compressed preseason created scheduling pressure for fantasy drafts. Commissioners should ask managers about alternate draft dates now, particularly in leagues that meet in person. Establishing availability for April or later could prevent a last-minute scramble. Easter falls on March 28, adding another consideration for leagues planning around the currently scheduled opening weekend.

Prepare a backup competition format

Keeper and dynasty leagues should also discuss how they would handle a substantially shortened season before making offseason decisions. The 60-game campaign in 2020 unfolded over just 10 weeks, illustrating how a reduced calendar can complicate head-to-head competition. A temporary switch to rotisserie scoring or another agreed-upon format could give leagues a workable alternative.

Reassess pitchers and schedule effects

A shorter spring training could leave starting pitchers less prepared for full workloads. During the first 24 days of 2022, only 18 pitchers reached 100 pitches in a start, compared with 46 starters across the equivalent opening stretch in 2026. That makes quality-start formats particularly worth monitoring, while relievers could gain early-season importance. Managers should also revisit park exposure and home-road balance if games are canceled. Those effects depend on whether MLB preserves the remaining schedule or replaces it entirely.
