Proven forwards set the foundation
Early fantasy hockey selections should balance scoring potential with availability, particularly in points leagues that also reward shots, hits and blocked shots. Jason Robertson makes a strong case on both fronts. The Dallas winger produced 96 points in 2025-26, ranked third in shots and fifth in power-play points, and completed his fourth consecutive 82-game season. His previous 109-point campaign also shows the ceiling remains substantial. David Pastrnak brings comparable consistency after reaching triple digits in four straight seasons. His 29 goals last season came with an 11.1% shooting percentage, leaving room for a rebound if his finishing improves. Kirill Kaprizov belongs in that premium group after delivering 45 goals and 44 assists in 78 games.
Consider the blue line at the turn
Managers drafting late in a 10-team league need not focus exclusively on forwards. Cale Makar offers an opportunity to secure a premier fantasy defenseman before returning to the deep pool of attacking talent. Leon Draisaitl remains an appealing target around that turn. He recorded 97 points in only 65 games in 2025-26, although 28 absences over the past two seasons warrant consideration. Evan Bouchard offers another high-upside defensive option through his offensive role alongside McDavid and Draisaitl on the power play. His appeal rests more on scoring than on hits or blocks.
Rising scorers deepen the choices
Montreal teammates Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki provide compelling alternatives. Caufield scored 51 goals in 2025-26, while Suzuki surpassed 100 points and has not missed a game since entering the league in 2019. Matt Boldy contributes across several scoring categories, finishing 10th in goals, 15th in shots and 13th in power-play points last season. Wyatt Johnston also carries considerable upside after producing 45 goals and 42 power-play points. For managers prioritizing a balanced statistical profile, Filip Forsberg remains a dependable option without needing a triple-digit points total to justify attention.
