Scrutiny moves to win-now benches
Last summer’s coaching carousel largely hit clubs that missed the playoffs. None of the six teams that changed coaches won a 2026 playoff series, and four finished more than 10 games out of the play-in races. The 2026-27 season brings a sharper focus: after numerous All-Stars changed teams, pressure intensifies on coaches expected to contend for a title. Five situations stand out.
Atkinson, Nurse and stacked East rosters
Kenny Atkinson, hired by Cleveland in 2024, followed a 64-win 2024-25 season with a 2026 East finals appearance, the franchise’s first without LeBron James since 1992. Yet the top-seeded Cavaliers were dominated by Indiana in the 2025 second round and swept by New York in the 2026 East finals. Owner Dan Gilbert backed the group with deals for Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Peyton Watson while retaining Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, who combine for $78 million this season. Atkinson must turn continuity into stronger finishes. Nurse survived a 24-win season and 2-12 start two years ago, then guided Philadelphia to a first-round series win over Boston last season. After Daryl Morey was fired in June, James and Jaylen Brown arrived. The 76ers, absent from the East finals since 2001, now sit in championship-or-bust mode.
Adelman, Johnson and Udoka in the West
Adelman replaced Michael Malone days before the 2025 postseason. Denver nearly reached the West finals that year but absorbed a first-round loss to Minnesota last season. Nikola Jokic averaged a 27-point triple-double and finished top two in MVP voting for a sixth straight season while planning to re-sign next summer. After losing Michael Porter Jr. And Watson, the Nuggets added DeMar DeRozan and Marvin Bagley III. Adelman needs better health from Aaron Gordon and a bounce-back from Christian Braun. Johnson, 39, is San Antonio’s second coach in nearly 30 years after Gregg Popovich. The Spurs won 62 games and beat the 2025 champion Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the West finals on the road before falling to the Knicks. He resisted major lineup changes through blown leads and a Game 4 collapse. With Victor Wembanyama, returning pieces and Tobias Harris, he must manage guards De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper and improve late-game offense. Udoka lifted Houston from lottery to playoffs but has not exited the first round in multiple tries despite big commitments to Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson. Fred VanVleet returns after a knee injury cost him last season. A first-round collapse against the Lakers without Luka Doncic exposed spacing and closing issues. An extension signed in 2025 buys some time, yet the Rockets must advance. Orlando’s move from Jamahl Mosley after 46 wins and a seven-game first-round loss to Detroit underscored limited patience when a first series win since 2010 remains elusive.
