Former staffer turns himself in

Former Auburn football staff member David Rudolph Jenrath, 24, surrendered to authorities Monday on felony charges of theft of trade secrets and computer tampering. Police said he was being held at the Lee County Jail in Auburn, Alabama, on $15,000 bond. The charges stem from allegations that confidential Auburn athletics information was taken and distributed without authorization. A complaint places the alleged incident at the Auburn Athletics Complex on July 19.

Allegations center on recruiting evaluations

The material allegedly sent to multiple schools concerned Auburn's recruiting evaluations. It did not include playbooks or information about name, image and likeness agreements or revenue-sharing distributions. In a Tuesday release, Auburn police described a business reporting that sensitive information had been stolen and shared with competitors. According to that account, a competitor received the information and returned it to the business. Police did not identify the schools alleged to have received the material. Charging documents accuse Jenrath of obtaining or keeping proprietary athletics information while employed at Auburn and copying or transmitting trade secrets without permission. The computer-tampering allegation concerns the unauthorized handling and disclosure of programs and data with the alleged intent to harass Auburn athletics.

Background in player evaluation

Jenrath, of Franklin, Tennessee, was not a full-time athletics department employee. His since-removed LinkedIn profile listed a player personnel scouting assistant role with Auburn football from January to June, evaluating running backs and special teams. He attended Tennessee and studied sports analytics and applied artificial intelligence.
