John Beake, a longtime Broncos executive who joined the organization in 1979, has died at age 87. The team announced the news Saturday and noted that family members confirmed the passing. During more than two decades with Denver, Beake held various personnel positions and later served as general manager starting in 1983.
Key Contributions to Franchise Success
Beake helped engineer the trade that brought John Elway from the Baltimore Colts. He guided the front office through five Super Bowl appearances, including back-to-back world championships in SB XXXII and SB XXXIII. Elway later added another title after the 2015 season while serving as the team's general manager.
Roles Before and After Broncos Tenure
Prior to his time in Denver, Beake worked as an offensive assistant for Hall of Famer Hank Stram with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1968-74 and the New Orleans Saints from 1976-77. In 2000 Beake moved into a vice president of administration role with the Broncos before joining the NFL league office as vice president of player development and managing director of NFL Europe football operations.
