From Writing to Front Office
Fred Claire built a 30-year career with the Dodgers after starting in sports writing and editing. He joined the club in public relations and rose to vice president of that department and promotions. During this period he helped develop the Dodger Blue branding and Think Blue campaign, and the club drew 3.3 million fans in 1978, the first time any major league team reached that mark.
Taking Over as General Manager
Claire became general manager after the prior executive was dismissed. In his first full season the team posted a 73-89 record, yet ownership kept him in the role with full authority over baseball operations. Under his leadership the club captured the 1988 World Series title.
Health Challenges and Legacy
Claire dealt with cancer for an 11-year period that included multiple surgeries and treatments. He is survived by his wife Sheryl and children Jeff, Jennifer and Kim. Team officials noted his contributions to the franchise and expressed gratitude for his leadership during a championship era.
