Fuld Declines Top Role
Sam Fuld turned down an offer to lead the Athletics' baseball operations and has removed himself from consideration. Fuld previously worked as general manager in Philadelphia and currently serves as president of business operations for the Phillies.
Candidates Emerge in Search
Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith stands as a leading candidate to take over baseball operations for the Athletics. Cardinals assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio was also a finalist but is expected to stay with St. Louis. The team had already dismissed general manager David Forst in August, with Dan Feinstein handling interim duties through the end of the season.
Recent Struggles and Future Plans
The Athletics finished the year at 64-98 after early expectations faded due to injuries and pitching issues. Only the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels posted worse records than the Athletics in 2026. The club last reached the playoffs in 2020 and is set to relocate from Sacramento to Las Vegas following the 2027 season.
