Giants seek an answer after Dart injury
The Giants have acquired J.J. McCarthy from the Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round pick, taking a chance on a former high draft selection as their quarterback plans unravel. Jaxson Dart’s Week 2 knee injury is expected to sideline him for at least the remainder of the regular season. Jameis Winston has struggled in relief, posting a 19.0 QBR against the Rams and a 27.9 in New York’s 12-7 victory over the Titans. The timing makes the move particularly awkward: New York extended Winston’s contract for two years and $13 million just 22 days before trading for another option. Seeking help is understandable, but the reversal raises questions about the Giants’ confidence in their original backup plan.
McCarthy brings potential, not certainty
Selected No. 10 in the 2024 draft, McCarthy has yet to turn that investment into dependable NFL production. A knee injury ended his rookie season before it began, and further injuries limited him to 10 starts in 2025. His 36.1 QBR that season ranked 38th among 45 qualifying quarterbacks. Those struggles came under Kevin O’Connell, adding to the concern about whether a change of teams can unlock better results. McCarthy then lost Minnesota’s starting competition to Kyler Murray and the backup role to Carson Wentz.
Minnesota gets a practical return
For the Vikings, the case is more straightforward. McCarthy had fallen behind both Murray and Wentz, leaving little immediate role for him and a risk that his trade value would decline further. Minnesota recovers draft compensation while reducing its remaining salary commitment. Murray’s approaching free agency leaves questions for 2027, but keeping McCarthy would not necessarily have resolved them. The Giants gain a developmental gamble; the Vikings secure a return for a quarterback already outside their primary plans.
