Memphis makes a backcourt change
The Memphis Grizzlies have released veteran point guard D’Angelo Russell and signed undrafted guard Brendan Hausen in a corresponding roster move Friday. The decision puts Russell back on the free-agent market with a month remaining before the season begins. Russell, 30, leaves Memphis without having played a game for the franchise. Hausen joins the Grizzlies after a college career spanning four seasons at Kansas State and Iowa.
Trades preceded Russell’s release
Russell opened last season with the Dallas Mavericks before moving to Washington in February as part of the Anthony Davis trade. Another move followed over the summer, when a six-team deal sent him to Memphis. Neither stop resulted in an appearance: Russell did not play for the Wizards or the Grizzlies. His release follows a stretch in which trades repeatedly changed his team.
Recent production
In 26 games with Dallas last year, Russell averaged 10.2 points and 4.0 assists. His production had been stronger with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2023-24, when he averaged 18 points and five assists. That Lakers season preceded several trades. Now, rather than preparing to make his Memphis debut, Russell is available to sign elsewhere.
