Hometown Connection for Cleveland
The left-hander grew up in the Tampa Bay area and attended high school roughly 45 minutes from the ballpark.
Strong Prior Results in Front of Family
Messick has already made two appearances against the Rays while pitching near his hometown. Last season he earned the win after allowing one run across six innings. In late July he again surrendered just one run, this time working 7⅔ innings.
Rays Counter and Look Ahead
Right-hander Freddy Peralta, acquired by Tampa Bay during the season, will oppose Messick. Peralta posted a 4-0 mark with a 0.96 ERA across five starts in September and has not yet faced Cleveland this year. Nick Martinez is slated to start Game 3 on Thursday. The Rays plan to keep the remainder of their staff available from the bullpen as needed.
