Eagerness to Play
After sitting idle for an extended period, the 33-year-old goaltender voiced clear enthusiasm about suiting up for the Devils and wearing No. 37. He described the wait as difficult and highlighted his desire to return to the ice with a skilled group that brought him in for a defined role both on and off the ice.
Trade Breakdown
The deal that sent Hellebuyck to New Jersey was finalized Friday after his suspension by the Jets for not reporting to training camp. In exchange, the Devils sent forward Dawson Mercer, goaltender Nico Daws, prospect Alexander Command, a 2029 second-round pick, a 2027 seventh-rounder and injured forward Nick Bjugstad. Hellebuyck has five seasons remaining on his seven-year contract that carries an $8.5 million annual cap hit. He will share duties with 36-year-old Jake Allen.
Team Outlook
Devils coach Sheldon Keefe noted the added confidence a goaltender of Hellebuyck's caliber brings to support Allen. General manager Sunny Mehta indicated the move strengthens a club that has won six of its first 10 games but missed the playoffs in two of the past three seasons and secured just one playoff series since 2012. Hellebuyck's first game remains undecided after his last appearance April 13.
