Richard's status remains uncertain
Indiana escaped visiting Northwestern on Friday, but the Hoosiers were left awaiting word on Turbo Richard after the starting running back suffered a right lower-leg injury before halftime and did not return. Richard was hurt near Indiana's sideline while Northwestern's Jamaal Johnson brought him down. He then hobbled toward the locker room. Coach Curt Cignetti described the play as a hip-drop tackle and said Brendan Flakes also hit Richard out of bounds. Neither action drew a penalty. Cignetti had no immediate update on the Boston College transfer. Richard gained 68 yards on nine carries before leaving, following an opening stretch of 315 rushing yards and four touchdowns across Indiana's first three games.
Beebe delivers in a tight finish
Lee Beebe Jr. Took over as the primary back and supplied the rushing production Indiana needed to stay ahead. Northwestern pulled within 15-13 early in the fourth quarter. A pass-interference penalty gave the Wildcats another opportunity to tie on a conversion attempt, but Indiana stopped Aidan Chiles on a designed run. A Northwestern facemask penalty on third-and-19 later extended an Indiana possession. Beebe followed with a 39-yard burst and a 4-yard touchdown run with 9:39 remaining. After the Wildcats narrowed the margin to 22-20, Beebe broke loose for 70 yards to the Northwestern 5-yard line. Hoover eventually finished the possession with a touchdown. Richard's injury adds to an already depleted backfield. Khobie Martin has been out since suffering a forearm injury against North Texas in the season opener and is expected back around midseason.
