Origin of the Band
Several longtime Iowa supporters, including a pharmacist, a health plan consultant and a former tax accountant, started learning Van Halen songs during the pandemic period. They combined the band name with a nod to former coach Hayden Fry, creating Van Hayden. They added custom black and gold stripes along with a winged logo to match the theme.
Game Day Performances
The band sets up near the south plaza before home games, including matchups against Ohio State. Members wear black pullovers with the Tigerhawk emblem, white pants, aviators and fake mustaches in the style associated with Fry. They perform reworked versions of familiar tracks that end with Hawks chants. A keytar player joined briefly before heading to college. The ambulance, known as the Vanbulance, allows quick setup and teardown between stops.
Fan Reception and Support
Tailgate hosts and university connections helped the group gain regular spots. Former athletic department staff noted the Fry family approved the concept, seeing it as an extension of Fry's emphasis on presentation. The performers focus on energy rather than perfection, aiming to hype crowds heading into the stadium. Their commitment has turned the project into a recurring part of Iowa game days without any expectation of payment.
