Ramsey weighing protection and performance
Jalen Ramsey intends to attempt to play against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, but the Steelers defensive back has not committed to being available after breaking his right wrist against the Cincinnati Bengals. Ramsey said Tuesday that the injury happened during the opening defensive series of Pittsburgh's Week 3 victory. He remained on the field for every defensive snap and recorded eight tackles despite the pain. His decision will depend on whether he can adequately protect the wrist without compromising his effectiveness. Ramsey indicated that he does not want to take the field if the injury prevents him from contributing at a level his teammates need. Pittsburgh listed him as limited in its practice estimates this week. He wore a sling Monday and what appeared to be a cast or brace Tuesday.
Secondary options remain unsettled
Ramsey is not the only uncertainty ahead of the Browns matchup. Slot cornerback Brandin Echols entered concussion protocol against Cincinnati and was also listed as limited during the Steelers' walkthroughs. Joey Porter Jr., meanwhile, received full-participation estimates in each walkthrough this week for the first time since his late-August activation from the physically unable to perform list. He has been inactive through the first three weeks while rebuilding his conditioning following a back injury. Pittsburgh could look to practice squad defensive back Doneiko Slaughter for slot help. Slaughter has been elevated for each of the first three games. Rookie Daylen Everette could also receive additional work after playing nearly half the defensive snaps against Cincinnati. He initially replaced the injured Jamel Dean, then continued alongside Dean after his return, taking over for Asante Samuel Jr. Everette's contribution included an important third-down pass breakup.
