Rehab remains the plan

The Washington Commanders are moving forward with rehabilitation for Jayden Daniels after another dislocation of his left elbow. General manager Adam Peters said surgery is not currently being considered and the team has not discussed placing Daniels on injured reserve. Daniels spent the past three days consulting specialists. His treatment will focus on strengthening the elbow, and he will wear a brace. Doctors have been encouraged by its condition, though another dislocation remains a possibility. Avoiding injured reserve would leave Washington free to bring Daniels back without the mandatory four-game absence that comes with that designation. His return date remains unsettled.

Another setback for Daniels

Daniels injured his nonthrowing elbow on the final play before halftime in Washington’s 37-20 loss at Dallas. As he took the snap, left guard Chris Paul stepped on his left foot. Daniels reached back with his left hand to break his fall, and his arm buckled. Postgame X-rays showed no fracture, and Daniels had an MRI on Monday. He previously dislocated the same elbow in Week 9 last season and aggravated it upon returning in Week 14. Surgery following this latest dislocation could have ended his season. Instead, Washington will proceed with a nonsurgical approach while managing the risk of another injury.

Mariota steps in

Marcus Mariota will start Sunday against Seattle as the Commanders seek their first victory after an 0-2 opening. Indianapolis and the Giants follow on Washington’s schedule. Daniels updated teammates on his medical consultations before the news became public and told them he would remain around the team. Players described an enthusiastic response to his message. Before the setback, Daniels had produced 260 passing yards, three touchdown passes and no interceptions this season, along with 100 rushing yards.
