Unusual Out in the Second
New York Yankees rookie outfielder Spencer Jones sent a high fly ball toward the roof at Tropicana Field during the second inning of Game 2 in the AL Division Series. The ball struck one of the catwalks and dropped back into play. Tampa Bay Rays right fielder Victor Mesa Jr. moved over from his position to make the catch in front of center fielder Jonny DeLuca, who had initially tracked the ball before pointing upward.
Runners and Review
Jones continued around the bases while the ball rattled on the structure above. Once Mesa secured the catch, umpires met to confirm the out under the stadium ground rules. The play marked the second instance in the postseason where a ball striking part of a roof affected the outcome.
Similar Roof Play Earlier
In the ninth inning of Game 1 between Milwaukee and San Diego, a high drive by Ty France struck a cable on the retractable roof at American Family Field. The ball then dropped into the glove of Brewers left fielder Jackson Chourio on the warning track for the out in the 3-2 win.
