A familiar figure takes charge

Liverpool have turned to Julian Ward to replace Richard Hughes as sporting director, bringing back an executive with extensive knowledge of the club's recruitment structure. Hughes has joined Al Hilal after leaving his Anfield role. Ward previously held the position during the 2022-23 campaign before stepping away for personal reasons. He returned to Fenway Sports Group as technical director in 2024 and now resumes responsibility for shaping Liverpool's squad. His Liverpool career began in 2012 with responsibility for scouting in Spain and Portugal. He later worked under Michael Edwards and helped deliver deals for Luis Díaz, Cody Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister and Darwin Núñez, alongside Mohamed Salah's contract renewal.

Contracts lead the agenda

The most pressing decisions concern captain Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Both are approaching the end of their contracts next summer while remaining important performers. Kostas Tsimikas, Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo have deals running until 2027. Mac Allister's longer-term position also requires attention after the midfielder revealed that Liverpool had not offered an extension beyond 2028. Recruitment remains another priority despite spending nearly €750 million over the past two years. Right back could require reinforcement depending on Conor Bradley's recovery from a serious knee injury, while the squad still lacks a specialist right winger.

Continuity matters beyond the transfer market

Ward's challenge extends beyond individual negotiations. Liverpool have cycled through four sporting directors since 2022, undermining the continuity that a head coach structure is designed to provide. A sustained partnership with Iraola would give the club a firmer foundation for recruitment and long-term planning. That stability is particularly valuable while a consortium's 38% stake awaits official ratification, although FSG retain control of football operations. Ward's familiarity with the hierarchy should ease the handover. The larger task is turning that familiarity into a consistent direction for the squad.
