Towns seeks clarity before title defense
Karl-Anthony Towns wants a long-term commitment from the Knicks, even as a contract extension appears unlikely to be completed before the season begins. Speaking at media day in Tarrytown, Towns emphasized his attachment to New York and his preference to take the court without uncertainty surrounding his future. He has supported the franchise since childhood and remains eager to stay. Towns is eligible for a four-year extension worth more than $276 million. His current contract pays $57 million this season and includes a $61.1 million player option for next season. The six-time All-Star helped drive New York’s championship run, averaging 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists during the playoffs. The Knicks defeated San Antonio in five games in the Finals to end a 53-year title drought.
Payroll pressure extends beyond Towns
Keeping that championship group intact requires navigating the NBA’s restrictive second apron. Those financial pressures have already contributed to backup center Mitchell Robinson’s departure to Boston this summer. Towns indicated that he leaves the financial planning to team president Leon Rose, but he does not intend to let contract concerns go unaddressed within the group. He stressed communication and focusing on matters the players can control. Josh Hart also is eligible for an extension. He will earn $20.9 million this season, with a $22.3 million team option for 2027-28. Hart acknowledged that unresolved contracts can create persistent questions and rumors that take a personal toll. While hoping for a resolution, he maintained that his commitment on the court would remain unchanged. For New York, managing those concerns is another challenge as it prepares to defend its title.
