Toronto follows through on its investment
Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors have agreed to a two-year, $115 million extension that includes a player option for the second year, extending Toronto’s commitment after its trade with the Clippers. An agreement had looked likely since the teams settled on trade terms in June. Leonard was approaching the final season of his existing contract, and Toronto had committed multiple unprotected picks to acquire him. Letting that investment become a short stay would have carried considerable risk. The extension comes in about $11 million below Leonard’s possible maximum. Its length is limited to two years by the NBA’s over-38 rule. Leonard is 35 and will turn 38 at the end of the deal.
Savings help, but availability remains the key
The discount gives Toronto some financial breathing room, though Leonard still projects to carry a cap hit among the league’s dozen highest during the extension. His ability offers a strong argument for the commitment. When available, Leonard remains among the NBA’s leading players, and his fit gives the Raptors reason for optimism. His extensive injury history, however, makes it difficult to separate that upside from the possibility of expensive absences. The savings are also smaller than those Houston secured with Kevin Durant’s two-year, $90 million contract last summer. Toronto has avoided paying the absolute maximum without turning this into an obvious bargain. The Raptors’ wager is ultimately on immediate contention. Keeping Leonard preserves the purpose of their trade, but a large salary commitment late in his career could make future roster construction more difficult if his availability or production slips.
