Talks Tabled for Key Players
The Knicks have decided to set aside contract extension discussions with Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart until later in the season. Towns remains eligible for a four-year agreement worth more than $276 million, with $57 million owed this season and a $61.1 million player option for the following year. The most recent proposal to him stood at approximately $200 million over four years. Hart is also extension eligible and is set to earn $20.9 million this season under a deal that includes a team option of $22.3 million for 2027-28.
Recent Achievements and Roster Context
Towns, a six-time All-Star, contributed 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game during the Knicks' title-winning campaign. New York captured the championship in a five-game Finals series against the San Antonio Spurs. After ending a 53-year title drought, the team faces restrictions that prevent entering the second spending apron.
Looking Ahead
Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby will become extension eligible next offseason. The Knicks currently hold the second-best odds to repeat as champions and become the first team to do so since the Golden State Warriors accomplished the feat in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.
