Guilty Pleas Entered in Multiple Cases
A Las Vegas sports bettor who faced indictments in three federal gambling matters has admitted guilt on several counts. Shane Hennen pleaded guilty to sports bribery along with aiding and abetting and conspiracy charges connected to wire fraud and money laundering. The admissions cover two of the cases and involve schemes in the NBA, NCAA and Chinese Basketball Association.
Details of the Basketball Schemes
Prosecutors described a nearly three-year operation that started around September 2022. Hennen worked as a fixer who coordinated with others to recruit and bribe players in the Chinese Basketball Association and NCAA men's basketball so teams would underperform and miss the spread. Large wagers were then placed on those contests, with proceeds directed back to the group. Hennen also admitted participating in a separate plan that used non-public information to wager on NBA games and players.
Sentencing Outlook and Remaining Charges
The maximum possible prison term stands at 125 years. Sentencing is set for Feb. 25, 2027. Hennen still faces charges in a third matter that centers on allegedly rigged poker games linked to organized crime. Two former NBA figures, Chauncey Billups and Damon Jones, were also named in that indictment.
